Mafia Island

The Mafia Archipelago consists of one large island (394 km²) and several smaller ones. Some of these are inhabited, such as Chole Island (2 km²), with a population of 800. Chole Bay, Mafia’s protected deep-water anchorage and original harbour, is studded with islands, sandbanks and beaches. The main town is Kilindoni. The stretch of water between the deltas of the Rufiji River and the island is called Mafia Channel. There are hippo on the island which can be scene on one of the land tours.Mafia Island is truly a paradise for the fisherman, snorkelers and divers . Located of the coast of Tanzania 46km from the mainland and 130km from Dar-es Salaam it is the most southern of the three main Islands ( Pemba & Zanzibar ) Mafia is not your bright lights white beach destination What it does have is the largest marine park in East Africa, which contains some of the finest unbleached coral in the Indian Ocean. There are also whale sharks in residence year round.
Mafia Island is therefore ideal for active people … divers,snorkelers,fishermen, sailors and walkers … looking for somewhere more off the beaten track.
